Miken | PLAYERS SERIES Slowpitch Softball Glove | Sizes 13″ – 15″ | Multiple Styles
Please note, this review is specific to the 1b (First Base) Miken Player Series glove (or mitt).I have been playing primarily 1b at various levels for a long time. Finding an adequate Slow Pitch specific 1b glove has always been a challenge. Baseball mitts are not big or deep enough and there are very few options aside from those. My regular glove is a 14 inch Miken Pro Player and it does the job, but still nothing scoops like a real 1b mitt. When I saw the Miken Player Series 1b mitt, I was very interested as my two previous SB specific mitts, a Guerrero and a Miken Soft, had been a bust. The Guerrero is “unbreakable” and slick, while the Miken Soft has a small pocket. The Pros of the Miken Player:It is almost game ready. Got it on Friday at noon, put some glove gel on it, hit the pocket with a wood-ball mallet, and used it that same night without any issues. My Miken Pro took a lot of hard work to break-in, the Player series took a couple of hours.Good quality overall, good deep pocket, good size webbing, and a good hand fit.Nice color schema if that matters. The Cons of the Miken Player:It is quite obvious a step down in quality compared to the Pro Series. The lacing feels and looks “cheap”.The handcrafting is also below the Pro level. The webbing bars are not properly aligned in relation to each other, but that does not impact the functinality, it just “looks” like quality control did not look at it in detail (if at all). The leather also seems “thinner” than the one used for the Pro version. In conclusion:There is very little information on this glove. It is not even listed at the Miken site, so I am assuming it is a new offering. That said, this is a very good glove for the price (half of what a custom or a Vinci costs) and I am happy with the easy break in, quality relative to price, how it feels in my hand, and seems to handle the 1b duties with aplomb. Durability may be less than the Miken Pro based on the lacing and the leather (only time will tell), but it definitively does the job and it is worth the modest price in a marker with few real options. It would be great to have a Pro version, but until then, this glove is a gamer and a keeper.Play Ball!
